Chic and Untroubled

“My mom said, ‘You will not go to Paris without studying the industry first,’” Banks said. “I went to the fashion library in Los Angeles and looked at all the French magazines from the past. My mom explained that I should study the names of the hairdressers, the stylists, the makeup artists, the photographers, the editors and, of course, the designers. I watched videotapes of models walking. My mom said, ‘This is not just glamour — it is a business.’ So when I arrived in Paris, I was ready.’” — Tyra Banks. From Jezebel.

It’s not quite new or old enough to be vintage, but it is defintely a great way to end a very long week.

See you, Monday.

The Very Bad Scarf

When Keith Olberman jokingly calls a piece in your wardrobe “jihadist chic,” you know it’s not going to be a good day.

Earlier this week, Dunkin Donuts pulled its ad featuring Rachel Ray because a hoard of conservative bloggers said the scarf she was wearing looked too much like a Keffiyah.

To which I say, didn’t we have this same kind of conversation at The Fashion Spot like a year ago after a very memorable Balenciaga Fall ‘07 collection?

But I guess Michelle Malkin doesn’t read Vogue.

No. This isn’t even mildly news worthy, but it does make the following slightly more interesting:

Will Shopbop take down their “radical” scarves like the one featured in the post from their site? Especially, when the brand has the political name, A Peace Treaty.

Or will they just be marked down to 50 % off and quickly bought up by those people who are still wearing Prada’s color-blocked knee-highs and silk turbans? Eh, I’m going for the latter.

Sharon Stone is a loser, literally

While this could be the result of a Botox injection gone wrong, nothing can excuse Sharon Stone’s words at the Cannes Film Festival last week.

The actress, pretending to be cultured and mildly intelligent, told a reporter that the massive earthquake that recently devastated China was the result of “bad karma” for the country treating her friend the Dalai Lama and the Tibetans unfairly.

And you thought that only people who wear flip-flops year round could be this silly.

Well, Dior China, who tapped the actress to front itsa ads, dropped her from all of its advertising and is having her image removed from all Chinese stores because of the marks.

In her defense, Dior swiftly released a public apology for Stone’s statements. It’s unlikely that the company will give the actress a second chance. Firstly, she doesn’t deserve one. And more importantly, the Supers are picking up ad campaigns with reckless abandonment.

The Morning Dish: It’s a Coach takeover

Coach Chief Executive Lew Frankfort plans opening an additional 200 stores in the next few years. Also, this Fall, the company plans on releasing a less obnoxious version of their “C” logo pattern. Hmm. Has somebody been reading this blog? [WSJ]

Marc Jacobs business partner, Robert Duffy: “No one wants to pay $500 for a pair of flip-flops,” Mr. Duffy said, sounding more like a consumer advocate than a luxury-brand kingpin. “Sometimes I’ll walk past a store and see that, or see rubber boots for $500, and it disgusts me. I know what it costs to make them.” Amen. [NYT]

In her spare time, Patricia Field designs shoes for Payless: “I love metallics because they’re neutral and go with everything. It’s disguised as a novelty, but really, it’s a classic. To me, it’s like leopard print, it’s classic, it never goes away.” [Nylon]

Naomi Campbell is Going to Jail…maybe

Yesterday, Naomi Campbell was charged with six offenses (three counts of assaulting a policeman, one count of disorderly conduct and two counts of using threatening behavior and abusive words to cabin crew) and could face six months in jail for her unfortunate incident at Heathrow Airport.

And now the fun ends.

Up until this point, the supermodel actually saw her career reach new heights after the little spitting (yuck!) fiasco a few months ago: She landed the YSL campaign, starred in an episode of Ugly Betty, and launched fragrance.

But I know she can bounce back from this. She has been the undisputed trouble maker — along with Kate Moss — of fashion practically her whole career and this is just another notch on her bad ass belt.

However, this is the first time where she could actually be facing jail, so maybe this will sober up her spit fire personality a little bit. I mean, she is almost forty and tantrums stopped for everybody else in adolescence…

If not, I’m sure Steven Klein and a major fashion magazine will be waiting for her when she gets out of the big house.
