London started it. Karl Lagerfeld approved it. And now Shopbop is selling it.
The “it” would be the phenomenon known as Ray-Ban wayfarer sunglasses. Just when we all thought they had hit their peak at last year’s Coachella festival, cheaper replicas pop-up every week on sites like Urban Outfitters, Topshop, and Forever21.
These original pair of Ray-Ban’s made their way onto Shopbop’s site about two weeks ago. In a bit of a fashion experiment, I’ve been watching to see how fast they would sell-out and in which color.
And here are my findings (get excited):
1. The aqua blue frames lasted all of four days. They are the pair of the summer. Next up on the chopping block? The bubblegum pink.
2. The two-tone isn’t working for anyone else, either.
3. If you haven’t bought a pair yet, it would be safe to invest now. They will still probably be popular next spring/summer, too. I’m still indifferent, but the aqua option was really, really, uh, not that bad.

Literally everyone is wearing Wayfarers’ or Aviators right now. I was in Milan last week, and the two styles together had about 50% of the people covered.
