Besides the Texas cheerleader conspiracy story and Designing Women, the Golden Girls was the only other legitimate reason to put it on the Lifetime channel after I got out of school.

Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever missed one episode of that show. Blanche’s hook-ups, Rose’s brilliantly stupid quips about her hometown in St. Olaf, Dorthy’s straight-forward talking, and Sophia’s tales of her home country all resonate with me in some way.

And it pains me to hear that Estelle Getty, who played Sophia on the show, has passed away at 84, just three days shy of her birthday. Someone, take me higher!

My favorite line from her was when she was eating a bag of Fritos and Dorthy snapped at her, which lead Sophia to yell: “These are FRITOS, Dorothy. What do you want me to do, swallow them whole?”

Ah, R.I.P Estelle. There is a graphic tee floating around the internet with all of ladies from Golden Girls on it. Obviously, the t-shirt doesn’t have a airbrushed faced of Tupac or Biggie on it. But Sophia’s gangsta demands just as much respect. Thanks for a being a friend, girl.
