Dissecting: House of Dereon’s kids ad

I’m not sure if it was because of a slow news day or because Blackberry was acting up again, but otherwise rational people i.e., professional bloggers lost their damn minds on Friday.

The polarizing topic: Beyonce’s clothing ad for the House of Dereon’s new girl’s line.

Words and phrases like “fuck me pumps” and “whores” were used to describe these tiny tots playing dress up at right.

While the styling may have been badly executed (Tina Knowles, the red pumps were a bit much), there really isn’t much to discuss about these ads.

If there should be any outrage, it should be about the following:

1. There are more people who know about the over-priced line known as the House of Dereon than real designers like Alexander Wang and Christopher Kane.

2. Beyonce will make millions off of this ish and she’s probably never even seen one sketch of the “scandalous” girl’s line.

3. And finally, sticking the darker black girl in one photo and placing her off to the side. Really, Beyonce? Did we never pick-up our copy of Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye? Have you not read anything about black models being shutout of runways, editorials, and advertisements for the past ten years? Do you really wish you were a Latina?

As far as the “tarted up” and “adult-ish” outfits the girls are wearing, get real people. Gymboree makes the same get-ups just less golden and over-the-top. And contrary to belief, not EVERY young girl aspires to be Miley Cyrus. So, can we all stop comparing Miley’s Vanity Fair pics to this H of D ad? Please?

We have a confession to make:

In high school, we cheered i.e., we were cheerleaders.

Yes, while our friends were fighting over leadership positions in Art Club and LULAC — we were stuffing toilet paper rolls with candy, putting together pep rallies, and cheering on a football team that frequently ended its season 1-12. And to be honest, we kind of liked it.

Sure, there was lots of drama and that time all twenty-two of us almost got suspended from school. Oh yeah, and that time our cheer sponsor told us we were probably going to hell. But other than that, it was quite a fun experience.

So, these ads for Alexander McQueen’s slightly more affordable McQ line definitely hold a special place in our hearts.

And how much does a McQueen cheer outfit cost? Around $600.

Uh, yeah.

Can you believe just last year M.I.A. couldn’t even sneak her way into a Marc Jacobs after-party in London? And now she is fronting the Marc by Marc campaign and Djing at the shindig she was so rudely denied access to a couple of moths ago.

I love Luke Worrell in this ad as well. Although I think he is more of a chunky platform type, no?

For all you girls out there who have spent your whole lives dodging humid weather - this one is for you.

For all you girls who have been called “nappy headed hoes” pre- Don Imus - this one is for you.

To all the thick-haired girls across the world - Chloe salutes you.
